Rustic Farmhouse Crochet Gnome Pattern – Easy 3-Step DIY

This cozy farmhouse gnome is made from just three simple pieces: a tall pointed hat, a round stuffed body, and a fluffy beard. It’s a quick, beginner-friendly project that comes together in an afternoon.

What You Need

  • Worsted weight yarn in a neutral or rustic color (cream, gray, or tan for the body)
  • A second color for the hat (Suggested: mustard, rust, or forest green for a farmhouse feel)
  • Faux fur yarn or bulky white/cream yarn for the beard
  • Crochet hook (Suggested: 4–5 mm, matched to your yarn)
  • Stuffing (polyester fiberfill)
  • Yarn needle (for sewing pieces and weaving in ends)
  • Small amount of jute twine or burlap ribbon for decoration (optional)
  • Scissors

How to Make It

Step 1: Make the Body

Start with a magic ring in your body color and work single crochet in a spiral, increasing evenly each round until the piece reaches your desired body width (Suggested: about 6–8 rounds increasing). Work several straight rounds with no increases to build height, then begin decreasing evenly toward the top. Stuff firmly as you close the last rounds so the body holds a rounded, stable shape that can stand upright.

Step 2: Make the Hat

Using your hat color, start with a magic ring and work single crochet, increasing evenly for just one or two rounds to form a small base. Then stop increasing and continue working straight rounds, letting the hat naturally taper inward slightly as it grows taller, until it reaches your desired hat length (Suggested: a tall, narrow cone that leans slightly to one side for a classic gnome look). Fasten off at the pointed tip.

Step 3: Make the Beard

Using faux fur yarn or a bulky cream/white yarn, crochet a small semi-circle or triangle shape: chain a short foundation, then work rows of single crochet, decreasing at the outer edges of each row so the piece narrows into a rounded beard shape that will cover the lower half of the gnome’s face area. If using faux fur yarn, keep the stitches loose so the fuzzy texture shows through.

Finishing

  • Sew the beard onto the upper front section of the body, positioning it so it covers where a face would normally be, since farmhouse gnomes are traditionally made without visible facial features.
  • Place the hat over the top of the body, tilting it slightly to one side, and sew it in place around the base of the hat where it meets the body.
  • If desired, tie a small strip of jute twine or burlap ribbon around the body just below the beard for a rustic farmhouse touch.
  • Weave in all remaining loose ends with the yarn needle.

Helpful Tips

  • Stuff the body firmly so the gnome can stand upright on its own without tipping over.
  • Let the hat flop slightly to one side rather than standing perfectly straight up, since a relaxed lean gives the gnome a more charming, rustic look.
  • Choose muted, earthy yarn colors like mustard, rust, or cream for a farmhouse feel instead of bright, saturated colors.

Final Result

A cozy, faceless farmhouse gnome with a tall leaning hat and a fluffy beard — a simple, charming handmade decoration for any rustic
